Matrix
The Matrix is a powerful, systematic approach that uses a relationship matrix to connect and evaluate projects within your portfolio—be it organizations, trends, topics, industries, or other customer-defined areas. By applying different indicators, it identifies hidden connections, blind spots, and opportunities that can significantly enhance decision-making.
This tool offers both a broad overview and detailed exploration. You can navigate seamlessly from high-level insights to specific data points to gain deeper understanding. Use the Matrix to uncover valuable insights in your portfolio, building a robust foundation for strategic, data-driven decisions.
Configure your Matrix
Smart Search is not available in the Matrix yet.
To populate the Matrix, please use Expert Search instead.
Select folders
The Matrix organizes folders from your portfolio along both the x (rows) and y (columns) axes. Each row and column corresponds to a project from your portfolio.
- Create folders: Begin by creating folders and adding projects to them.
- Select folders for rows and columns. Choose which folders you want to be displayed in your Matrix. Note that only projects containing queries will be shown.
Just click on the Edit button in the Select visible folders section and Save.

Select indicators
Choose the indicator you want your Matrix analysis to focus on. You can select from the full range of automated MAPEGY indicators. Simply click on the dropdown menu under Indicator and select your preferred one.

Select normalization option
Normalization in the Matrix is a statistical process that adjusts values to enable meaningful comparisons. It enhances your ability to analyze the significance of combined cells in relation to rows, columns, or both.
Just click on the dropdown menu under Normalization and choose between:
- Normalization by row: This option evaluates each cell's relevance within its row, helping you understand the significance of a particular column value within the context of that row.
For example, imagine you have a Matrix where columns represent pharmaceutical organizations and rows represent medical trends: Normalization by row will reveal how much each organization contributes to a specific trend. - Normalization by column: This option evaluates how much each cell contributes to the total of its column, helping you understand the significance of a particular row value within the context of that column. For the same example, this approach will highlight a company's involvement across all trends, offering insight into its broader impact.
- Normalization by both: Normalization by both rows and columns adjusts each cell’s value based on its significance within both its row and its column. For the same example, this approach ensures balanced insights by considering how significant the trend is for the organization and how significant the organization is for the trend. Therefore, it can identify if an organization is disproportionately focused on one trend or has an equal impact across multiple areas.
- None (no normalization). If you select this option, the Matrix will display raw values without any statistical adjustments. This means the data will remain unnormalized, showing absolute values as they are
When it comes to growth indicators, growth rate normalization transforms raw growth rates into simplified growth factors. This makes it easier to interpret trends by clearly distinguishing between positive and negative growth, helping you better understand the dynamics of change over time.
Select view
The default Matrix view shows both numbers and colors in the cells, providing detailed insights, while the Compact View only displays colors, making it smaller and easier to navigate, especially on smaller screens.
To switch to the Compact View, simply check the box next to "Compact View".
Process and clean
Once you've selected the folders you want to visualize, you can begin generating your Matrix. Simply click on Start Processing below the folder selection section.
This process may take some time, so we recommend keeping the window open until the Matrix is fully generated. Alternatively, you can pause the generation by clicking Pause and save your results to resume later. When ready, click Continue Processing to pick up where you left off.
You can filter out results that match specific conditions by using the Cleaning Options. Simply click on the Cleaning Options button and select the criteria for the results you want to remove. This helps refine your Matrix for more targeted insights.
You can change the selected indicator at any time without needing to regenerate the entire Matrix. Simply choose a new indicator, and the Matrix will update dynamically.
Interpret your Matrix
Each row and column in the Matrix represents a project, and each cell within the Matrix represents the intersection between two projects. Additionally, the marginal cells display the indicator values for each individual project, allowing for better comparison.
The color intensity in the cells indicates the indicator's value—the darker the color, the higher the indicator.
For growth indicators in the Matrix, red indicates negative growth, while blue represents positive growth, providing a clear visual distinction between declining and growing trends.
KPIs Status
To help you distinguish between missing, pending, or failed KPIs, we use status indicators:
- Pending Calculation 🕒 (Light Grey Loading Icon) – Displayed when the KPI is still being processed. Refresh the page to see updates.
- Failed Calculation ⚠️ (Error Icon) – Displayed when the KPI update was unsuccessful. This is usually caused by a too broad query.
- Missing Information “-” – Shown when the KPI value is null. This happens when the query is not supported (e.g., Company KPIs for Organizations or Smart Searches) or when there isn’t enough data to determine a value with certainty.
Navigate your Matrix
- Hovering over a project name or cell will display the description and indicators of that project.
- Clicking on a project name or cell will open the project for more detailed exploration.
- Hovering over an intersection cell will show you the indicators for that specific intersection.
- Clicking on an intersection cell will open the search, allowing you to explore further in your desired panels.
- You can also collapse folders by clicking on the folder name. This will hide all projects within that folder and display the average indicators for the folder instead.
Export your Matrix
You can export your Matrix to various formats, including CSV, PNG, ODS, XLS, or XLSX. This allows you to share, analyze, or archive your data in the format that best suits your needs.
